WRITING: A LETTER TO THE BOSS

This is an unwise, self-destruction email,  with an angry undertone that is bound to ignite future trouble. But for all the mistreatment in the past two years, I must let it out. Also, the ass-kissing culture the boss is cultivating, especially among juniors, needs a check.

After emailing him and the school, I feel much relieved.

——————————————

Dear R.,

Since you asked, here is my update: I do have another paper in press at P, the journal that counts on the U list. As Y mentioned yesterday, this is a list that actually matters in B-school ranking. The paper comes from the master thesis by our 2012 graduate, T. The thesis was supervised by me, M, and Y.

The paper breaks no new ground, builds no new framework, develops no new theory, provides no new explanation, and attracts no media attention. It only attempts to make one idea precise. Even that is doubtable.

But the paper does help T land a tenure-track position. So four years after our indoctrination, our student T is officially joining the tribe.

Best,

WRITING: ACADEMIC POLITICS, 4

So the drama goes on. Till now, five committee members, including two outsiders, have asked for a hiring meeting—the nightmare for the stammer J.

J remains dead silent, the same trick the Boss always plays. It worked well in the past: as time goes by, people will shift attention elsewhere and the fire will dire out.

Not this time. B and E are determined to expose J (and the Boss) to the campus. Their intention has a legitimate camouflage: the committee can only vote on matters they understand. But J is unable to specify the candidate qualification, the central issue. Then holding a meeting to discuss is a sensible way to go.

J (and the Boss) face a dilemma. Calling a meeting, J’s inability of teaching will be exposed to the campus. Remaining silent, B and E may resign, which will create more noise on campus.

Either way, it can only get uglier…

WRITING: ON TYM REVISION

I tried to work on TYM, but could not get much done.

The distraction is largely self-made. In fact, I have already restricted my email and blog time to evening. Still, too many activities during day time.

For academic writing,  long time concentration is a must. In particular, one needs long warm up time to get into the zone. Therefore, to get the revision done on schedule, I must block the morning doing nothing but writing. Also, I must reduce other activities.
